What to expect when getting a dental crown

Dental crown treatment usually requires two dental appointments.

A dental crown is a restoration that covers the entire visible surface of a tooth, restoring it to its original shape and size. This can be done with the use of an all-ceramic crown, a gold alloy crown, or a porcelain overlay fused to a metal crown. A dental crown procedure usually takes two appointments, one for preparing the tooth by removing some enamel and another appointment for placing the new crown over the top of the prepared tooth.

Read on to find out more about what to expect from the treatment process, and if you are a suitable candidate for treatment…

When is a dental crown recommended?

Your dentist might recommend a dental crown in cases where a damaged or a weakened tooth needs to be protected or restored. This may be necessary in the case of a severely decayed tooth, or a tooth that is misshapen or discoloured.

A dental crown is often used to cover a tooth that has a particularly large filling, or one that has been weakened as a result of root canal therapy. Dental crowns are also placed after dental implant surgery to help restore oral form and function.

How long does it take?

The process of having a dental crown placed generally takes two appointments. During the first appointment, your dentist will examine the damaged tooth and prepare it for your crown. When the tooth is ready, your dentist will make an impression of the tooth. This impression will be sent to a dental laboratory where your crown will be fabricated according to your particular needs. Your dentist will place a temporary crown in the meantime.

When your crown has been fabricated, you will need to see your dentist for a second appointment. Your dentist will remove your temporary crown and ensure that the shade, shape and fit of your new crown is correct. They will then cement your crown in place.

What does the recovery involve?

The recovery period following the placement of a dental crown is usually fairly short. In fact, you should not feel any considerable discomfort at all. You might notice that the treated tooth feels a little different after your procedure, but you should adjust to the feeling of your restoration within a few days. Your crown should feel comfortable when you bite and chew, and you will enjoy fully restored oral function.

What are the options?

If you are a suitable candidate for a dental crown, you will have the choice of various materials. Each type of crown has its own set of benefits, which your dentist will explain to you.

Some of the available options include all-ceramic crowns, which achieve a natural-looking result; gold alloy crowns, which are made from gold and other metal alloys for strength; and porcelain overlays bonded to metal crowns, which involve the application of porcelain in layers on top of a metal base.

If you are considering a dental crown, but are not sure which type is right for you, don’t hesitate to raise any questions or concerns that you have with your dentist.
