What Is Sleep Dentistry?

Sleep dentistry, also called sedation dentistry, uses medication to help you stay deeply relaxed during dental treatment. In most cases, it does not involve full general anaesthesia. You remain conscious but calm, and many patients recall little of the procedure afterwards.

At Crown Dental Group in Narre Warren, we use intravenous (IV) sedation, administered by a specialist anaesthetist who attends our Narre Warren surgery on scheduled days. Because the anaesthetist attends by arrangement, sleep dentistry appointments are booked in advance rather than offered on the day.

Pros of Sleep Dentistry

  • Eliminates dental anxiety and fear
  • Reduces pain and discomfort during treatment
  • Allows completion of multiple treatments in a single visit
  • Helps patients with sensitive teeth or strong gag reflexes
  • Administered by a specialist anesthetist.

Cons of Sleep Dentistry

  • Requires monitoring and professional supervision
  • Some patients may experience mild drowsiness afterward
  • Not suitable for all medical conditions; a consultation is required

Who Sleep Dentistry Helps?

Most people assume sleep dentistry is reserved for extreme cases, and that assumption stops a lot of them from asking about it. In practice the reasons patients choose it are broader than fear alone. Some come to us because a strong gag reflex or a particularly sensitive bite has made ordinary treatment difficult for years. Others have a long list of work to get through and would rather deal with it in one sitting than return week after week.

A consultation is required first. Sedation is not suitable for every medical condition, and your dentist and the anaesthetist will review your health history before proceeding.

You feel anxious or afraid

Even thinking about an appointment can be enough to put you off booking one. Sedation lets you get the treatment done while you stay deeply relaxed.

You have not been to a dentist in years

Time away usually means there is more to catch up on. Sedation makes a bigger first appointment much easier to face.

You have a strong gag reflex

If you gag easily, even simple treatment can be hard to sit through. Sedation helps settle the reflex so your dentist can work comfortably.

Your teeth are very sensitive

Some people feel more than others, even with local anaesthetic. Sedation adds another layer of comfort on top of it.

You have a lot of work to get through

Long or complex treatment normally takes several visits. Sedation lets us do more in one sitting, so you come in less often.

You find it hard to stay still

Sitting with your mouth open for a long stretch is difficult for plenty of people. Sedation makes a long appointment far more manageable.

What Sleep Dentistry Costs

Sleep dentistry involves two separate fees, and it helps to see them apart.

The anaesthetist’s fee. This is charged by the specialist anaesthetist directly, not by the practice. The initial anaesthetist consultation is $300. Sedation is then charged at $1,200 per hour, and only for the time you are actually receiving dental treatment.

Your dental treatment fee. This is separate and depends entirely on what is being done. Sedation is not a treatment in itself, it is how the treatment is delivered. Two fillings under sedation and a full mouth rehabilitation under sedation sit at opposite ends of the range.

This is why we cannot quote a single figure for sleep dentistry. The total depends on how long you are sedated and what work is carried out. At your consultation you will receive a written quote covering both parts, and nothing proceeds until you have seen it and agreed.

Because sedation lets us complete more in one session, patients needing several treatments often find the sedation time shorter than they expected.

Why Choose Sleep Dentistry?

Sleep dentistry offers a safe and gentle solution for patients who experience dental anxiety, fear, or sensitivity. By using professional sedation techniques, our team at Crown Dental Group ensures every treatment is comfortable, efficient, and stress-free, allowing you to receive the dental care your smile needs without worry.

Comfort During Treatment

Sleep dentistry allows patients to receive dental care without stress, worry, or fear. Many patients find it easier to complete longer or more involved procedures in a single appointment.

Reduced Anxiety & Stress

For those who have avoided dental care due to fear, sedation dentistry provides a safe and gentle solution. Patients often report feeling calm and relaxed, making future visits less intimidating.

Efficient Care

By relaxing patients, sleep dentistry allows dentists to perform multiple procedures in one session. This can reduce the number of visits needed, saving time and minimising disruption to your schedule.

Safe & Monitored

At Crown Dental Group, sedation is administered by trained dental professionals with careful monitoring. Your safety and well-being are always our top priority.

Frequently asked questions about Sedation Dentistry

Will I be asleep during my treatment?

Most forms of sleep dentistry leave you conscious but deeply relaxed. You may not remember the procedure afterwards.

What is the fee for IV sedation?

Anaesthetist consultation is $300
$1200 an hour paid directly to the anaesthetist
Fee is only for dental treatment time.

Why there is a fee for IV sedation?

A fee is associated because anaesthesia is administered safely by a specialist. The anaesthetist will care for you from the time you are put to sleep until you are discharged.

Is IV sedation safe?

IV sedation is administered and monitored throughout by a specialist anaesthetist. Your health history is reviewed beforehand, and sedation is not recommended where a medical condition makes it unsuitable.

How long does recovery take?

Most patients are ready to go home within about an hour of treatment finishing. The effects of sedation take longer to wear off fully, usually two to three hours, so you will feel drowsy for the rest of the day. You must have an adult drive you home and stay with you.

Can children use sleep dentistry?

Yes. Sedation can help children feel calm during dental visits, especially for extensive or complex procedures.

Can I get sleep dentistry at short notice?

Not usually. The specialist anaesthetist attends our Narre Warren dental clinic on scheduled days, so these appointments are arranged in advance.

How much dental work can be done in one session?

Often a great deal more than in a standard appointment. Many patients complete treatment in one longer session that would otherwise have taken several visits.

I am extremely anxious. Can I talk to someone first?

Yes. Call (03) 7003 2229 and tell us you are anxious. We can arrange a consultation with no treatment involved, so you can meet the team and ask questions before deciding anything.
