Dental Bridges and Crowns

dental crowns treatment

If you are suffering from a lost tooth or multiple teeth, a dental bridge can be used. Dental bridges can restore the appearance and function of the teeth as they fill the gaps of lost teeth with prosthetic ones. Crown Dental offers both dental crowns and bridges treatment.

Dental bridges are either held in place by dental crowns on the adjacent teeth or a metal wire attached to the backside of the adjacent teeth as support.

Dental bridges are created in a dental lab using impressions of your teeth and should correctly fit in with your bite pattern.

When are dental bridges used?

Dental bridges are used when there are missing teeth that cause bite issues, difficulty chewing or even pain.

Dental bridges are also a great option if you feel uncomfortable with your smile due to missing teeth.

Types of dental bridges:

Cantilever bridge

The bridge is used when there is only one adjacent tooth on one side to the space you want filled. The bridge is only firmly attached and held down on one side by a single dental crown, meaning it can become looser more easily than other fixed bridges.

Fixed bridge

The most common type of dental bridge is the fixed bridge which is anchored down by dental crowns on both adjacent sides to the gap being filled. This bridge is generally firmer and stronger than the cantilever bridge.

Bonded bridge

This bridge does not include any crowns and is instead held in place by metal wings which attach to the backside of the adjacent teeth.

What is a crown in dental treatment?

Dental crowns are tooth shaped permanent fixtures that are used to fix many dental issues, provide protection, strength and restore the appearance of a tooth.

Tooth decay, chips and cracks are some common issues that require dental crowns for protection and to restore the beautiful natural appearance.

When are dental crowns used?

Dental crowns are commonly used in the following circumstances:

  • Hide extreme discolouration
  • Repair a worn or fractured tooth
  • Replace decayed tooth (only if a filling is not sufficient)
  • Anchor a dental bridge down to adjacent teeth
  • Cover badly shaped tooth

What is the dental crown procedure?

Our dentists will examine your tooth and decide whether a dental crown is the most appropriate treatment for you, as you must have sufficient bone quantity and quality to be able to support a crown.

Our dentists will use a drill to remove the outer surface of the tooth to make enough room for a dental crown. However, if there is not enough tooth left for a crown, the dentist may add a buildup as a foundation for the crown.

Crowns are custom made using impressions of your tooth. The crown will be made to encase all damaged tooth that sits above the gum line to prevent further damage from occurring.

While your custom dental crown is being made, our dentist will place a temporary crown for protection over your tooth until the permanent crown is ready to be cemented over your tooth.

The crown should correctly fit your tooth and bite pattern.

How long will results last for?

Both dental bridges and crowns treatment will last between five to 15 years, depending on how well you look after your oral health. Make sure to clean your mouth daily and maintain regular checkups with the dentist every six months.

Our experienced team at Crown Dental Group in offers both crowns and bridges, among many other general and cosmetic dentistry treatments. If you would like to find out more information or to book an appointment with us, please contact us here.
